The PowerHitch is a rear mounted device designed to hydraulically aid in the coupling of trailers to vehicles in the light duty classes of 1-5 as defined by NHTSA.
The patented embodiment of the system is an assembly of metal parts and pins to create a “swing arm” that is hydraulically actuated and features a typical “ball” or “pintle” that is standard for all light duty coupling.
This hitch then fits into the typical square tube steel receiver of any light duty vehicle using the standard ⅝” diameter locking pin.
By remotely activating the “power unit” via wireless signal, the hydraulic cylinder will drive the swing arm, with attached ball or pintle, in a vertical motion, up or down as so desired by the operator. Thus the powered motion of the swing arm can couple and lift the trailer tongue off its jack without using any labor and also from the comfort and safety of the vehicle cab. Once the coupling is secure the operator then exits the vehicle and slides in the PowerHitch “travel pin” thus locking the swing arm in place for safe travel.
With the additional assistance of a back-up camera, (now standard on all vehicles), the laborious and dangerous task of connecting a trailer to a vehicle becomes quite easy.
The PowerHitch has two main assemblies, 1. the patented metallic hitch, and 2. the power unit.
The power unit has 5 distinct parts,1. the 12 volt drive motor, 2. the solenoid switch, 3. the hydraulic pump, 4. the hydraulic fluid reservoir, and 5. the mounting plate and shroud.
The power unit is housed in a rigid plastic molded shroud to protect it from the elements since some applications require an exterior installation.
The power unit requires a 12 volt fused electrical supply wire and ground wire.
The PowerHitch will carry a limited lifetime warranty on the hitch itself and a 2 year limited warranty on all other parts. The warranty will state that a certified mechanic must perform the initial installation of the power unit and it’s electrical connections, and the installation of the hydraulic fluid transfer lines.
